Before Adventures in Odyssey existed, Focus on the Family was already experimenting with creating audio drama. One production they aired in 1986 is called Gone Fishing and follows the character Larry Turner as he skips work to go fishing, and bumps into another man who gives him a talking-to. You can hear this episode for free on the Official Podcast. Plus, we hear an interview with Chuck Bolte, who voices Larry in this episode and would later go on to play George Barclay. Chuck talks about how he got involved with Focus on the Family and got the actors together for their early productions. On this week's edition of the Official Adventures in Odyssey Podcast, hosts Bob and Jesse give away an audio episode Focus on the Family produced before AIO existed: a drama called Spare Tire. In this story Adam and his wife Jennifer embark on a Christmas road trip and wind up getting caught in a snowstorm. It stars Chuck Bolte, who would later go on to voice the popular character George Barclay. After the episode, we hear an interview with Adventures in Odyssey co-creator Steve Harris. He talks about the planning that went into producing this first audio drama in 1983, working with various actors, Family Portraits, and the creation of Adventures in Odyssey in November 1987, thirty years ago. In this story Jack Davis and Oscar Peterson, bored during a summer heatwave, turn into private detectives to uncover the mystery of an oddball kid with an armload of lumber. It's the perfect episode for you and your family to listen to sometime this summer. All you have to do is fill out some basic information to gain access to your very own free download.
And once you've listened to that episode, why not do some summer reading? You can also get a free download of the novel Darien's Rise by Paul McCusker, the first book in the Passages series. In this story we find out that Jack Allen has purchased some goods from the Estate of a retired Odyssey school teacher who has passed away. As Jack says: "Nothing remarkable", except an old Manuscript written in a school notebook. The title reads: Manuscript #1 "The Chronicle of the Chosen", and is dated October 3rd, 1958. Jack brings the manuscript into Whit's End and shows it to Whit. Whit takes it home and reads it. The story begins in the summer as Kyle and Anna, two kids from 1950's Odyssey, find themselves transported to a strange new world called Marus. Another Adventures in Odyssey episode is now available for free. Episode 562: The Last "I Do" from Album 44: Eugene Returns! has just been released as a free download from Focus on the Family. In this show, Kids' Radio tells the story about the priest, Saint Valentine, who defies a third-century Roman emperor who outlaws marriage. As Valentine's Day is only a little over three weeks away, this is a timely episode release. This episode is also notable in its strong defense of marriage which is the basis of families and society at large, which is certainly a core tenant of Focus on the Family's mission.
